Pre-show talk: Concrete Communities x Dezeen*

5-6pm Friday 24 May, Gillian Lynne Theatre

*For entry to the free pre-show talk, attendees must have one ticket per person to the 7.30pm performance of Standing at the Sky’s Edge on Friday 24 May.

Hosted by Concrete Communities founder and Park Hill resident, Leanne Cloudsdale, in association with Dezeen, this panel event hopes to kickstart a conversation around the concept of architecture and its impact on building communities.

Panelists include:
  • Ben Stones, Set & Costume Designer for Standing at the Sky’s Edge
  • Sujata Burman, London Design Festival
  • Catherine Croft, 20th Century Society
  • Amy Peacock, Dezeen contributor

With the Grade II* listed Park Hill, Sheffield as the focus, the discussion will take place on the set of the award-winning west-end musical, Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which explores the changing face of modern Britain via the fictional stories of families living at Park Hill from the 1960s to the present day.

Through open dialogue, the panel members will unravel their own thoughts about the life-cycle of post-war architecture – in particular, social housing, and try to unpick the power of the place we call ‘home’.
The largest listed building in Europe, the brutalism of Park Hill has always divided opinion. Saved from demolition, this concrete masterpiece has recently undergone a lengthy process of award-winning regeneration. Whilst some original residents still remain, the majority are now leaseholders with an eye for modernism. Through political upheaval, technological advancements, a global pandemic and significant cultural shifts, the ‘streets in the sky’ continue to thrive.
In a one-of-a-kind event on the set of Standing at the Sky’s Edge, the panel will lead an engaging debate on the legacy of Park Hill and why this former council estate deserves the international recognition it receives as a one of the best places to live in the United Kingdom.
